Understanding and Enforcing Regulations to Improve Your Health and Safety at Work

This class discusses key health and safety issues facing nurses today including workplace violence and patient handling injuries.

Workplace violence is increasingly a cause for concern for nurses. It is not just “part of the job;” there are clear steps that employers can take to prevent violent incidents from occurring or escalating. That’s why NNU is fighting for a federal standard mandating workplace violence prevention plans in all hospitals and many other healthcare settings.

Patient handling is part and parcel of direct-care nursing. But each manual lift or mobilization can cause microinjuries, which can suddenly accumulate into a severe back, shoulder, or other injury. These injuries can be career-ending, chronic pain-causing, debilitating injuries. And they are entirely preventable. NNU advocates for laws and regulations that require the replacement of all manual patient handling with equipment and available, trained staff.

This class will discuss how regulations get enforced by OSHA, other enforcement agencies, and by nurses. Drawing on participants’ experiences, the class will describe how to make health and safety complaints, how inspections happen, and what injuries get reported to enforcement agencies.

Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify impediments to RN health and safety in the workplace.
  2. Describe key provisions of effective health and safety regulations.
  3. Discuss OSHA and other enforcement agency procedures.
  4. Articulate strategies nurses can use to take concerted, collective action in their facilities to improve their health and safety protections.
